Forbidden Knowledge

Her mom sighed, a little defeated. "Well... yes, that's true. I 'spose you're old enough to know now."

She walked over to the dining table and sat down, motioning for the young Miqo'te to sit next to her. An uncomfortable feeling sank into the room, a sudden, unimaginable heaviness. It didn't seem right.

All she did was ask why she was named so. Her mom said that it was because she enjoyed eating peppercorn when she was growing up, but that couldn't have been it. She had heard the story before, but it didn't make any sense. Everyone else, after all, got names when they were born. What did her parents call her before then? Something was strange. Something really didn't seem-

"We..." Her mom reached out to hold her hands in a comforting gesture, out of concern. Sad eyes watched her carefully "...should have told you this earlier. I want you to remember that we love you."

"Of course, mom." It won't be until later, when she was much older, that she would know what that would mean to her.

"We are not your birth parents."

"You're not my..." She repeats, at first unsure of what to make of it.

Her mom across from the table nodded. "You were found wandering around alone in the Black Shroud by one of our friends. We took you in..."

She sat silently, ears leaned back as she listened.

"...our friend thought it would be easier that way, since you were a Miqo'te like us. We don't know what happened to your parents, but... judging by your physical state at the time, s̴̏o̴̟͝m̸̘̿e̸͍͝t̴͕̄h̴̠̚i̶̬͘ṋ̵͠ḡ̷̦ ̵̳̋t̶̩͑e̷̝̊r̷̨̾r̵͎̈́i̵̳͊b̵̧͝l̴͉͑e̴͊͜ ̶̤̂h̶̯͛a̵̫̽d̵̐ͅ ̵̫̏h̷̼́a̷̜p̵̱͘p̷̝̕ĕ̴̟ń̵̻e̵͔d̴̊͜ ̴̭̆t̴̞͊o̵͍͠ ̵̣͘t̷̎h̶̺͛ẽ̴̢m̷̝͆.̶̘̈́ I'm sure they would have l̴̹̠͝o̷͔͐v̶̼͗̕ḙ̷̲̈̇d̷̪͗͠ you as much as we do."

Pepper kicked a stone down the dirt path, clad in comfortable clothing, a bag with an embroidered yellow patch of two entwined snakes slung over her shoulder, carrying packages and letters to deliver. It was another overnight run. Another overnight where she was left alone with her thoughts and the Moon was hidden from sight.

"Why do I always think of things like this..."
